Social Media is gaining acceptance in public school systems as a 21st Century learning tool. Schools seem divided as to it's use. What are the pro's and con's of using social media in the classroom?
I have noticed in the high school here that it is also very divided. I have noticed the newer, younger teachers are more open to using it than the veteran teachers. If students miss school (happens a lot in New Town) then the students can get the assignment and work on it at home over whatever social network the teacher is using. Edmodo for example I feel is more secure than some others, wiki. The teacher gives the students a code to get onto the sight and the teacher monitors it. One down side here would be student acess to internet at home (not all homes here have it due to large poverty). Brenda
Well, students can use Facebook as well if the teacher has a Facebook page for the class. Students need an account and like the class page to gain access. Most students have a FB account, but yes, internet access is not in every home. The downside to FB is the cyber bullying that occurs. Education on how to properly use this is a must.
